We have often presented milk and, in particular, plant-based drinks to you on our blog. Find out, for example, how you can make plant-based drinks yourself or how eco-friendly plant-based drinks really are.
Nowadays, if you no longer want to consume milk or are intolerant to it, you can fall back on numerous alternatives. For example, there is soy drink, various nut drinks such as almond milk or hazelnut milk and, last but not least, cereal drinks such as oat drink.
Today we will introduce you to the different types of yoghurt. For example, there is Greek yoghurt or natural yoghurt. But there are also a lot of alternatives to yoghurt made from cow's or other animal milk. Vegan varieties, for example, are based on soy or coconut. One thing is for sure: they all go well with our mueslis and crunchy granola. You can buy granola or muesli in the Verival Shop.

Simple and delicious – natural yoghurt
First of all, we want to address the question of what yoghurt actually is and how it is made. The process of producing yoghurt is called fermentation. Lactic acid bacteria are added to the milk during this process. The bacteria convert the milk sugar (lactose) into lactic acid (lactate). The pH value decreases, causing the protein to coagulate and yoghurt to form.
Plain yoghurt is yoghurt to which no sugar or fruit has been added. It has a sour taste. In general, it can be said that plain yoghurt is a healthy food, which contains a lot of good calcium.
Yoghurts come in many varieties, including yoghurt made from skimmed milk, low-fat yoghurt, normal yoghurt, cream yoghurt and Greek yoghurt, which we will look at in more detail shortly. In general, it can be said that the creamier the yoghurt, the higher the fat content of the product. Fruit and other flavours such as chocolate, nuts or vanilla are also often added to natural yoghurt.
Greek yoghurt is booming!
Everyone knows it, Greek yoghurt – but why is it so popular at the moment and what makes it different from ‘normal’ yoghurt?
Greek yoghurt has a particularly creamy consistency and is therefore different from the usually rather liquid yoghurt. It also tastes more intense.
To produce Greek yoghurt, milk is used, as with normal yoghurt. However, a significantly higher amount is needed. This is because the water and whey are drained off, leaving only the really creamy ingredients. This is how it gets its thick consistency.
Due to this manufacturing process, Greek yoghurt is richer in protein and lower in carbohydrates than regular yoghurts. This is why athletes in particular like to reach for the alternative. However, it also has a higher fat content, namely almost 10 percent. Greek yoghurt can be enjoyed both sweet and savoury. It tastes great with honey or fresh fruit for breakfast or as a sweet snack between meals. Greek yoghurt is also perfect for sauces and soups, salads or casseroles. It tastes particularly good with our delicious Verival Crunchys as a topping.

Vegan yoghurt as an alternative
Nowadays, there are also many plant-based alternatives to regular yoghurts made from milk. We would like to introduce you to four of them in this blog post:
- coconut yoghurt,
- almond yoghurt,
- cashew yoghurt and
- soya yoghurt.
Coconut yoghurt
Coconut yoghurt is particularly filling and is also nutritious. It has a rather high fat content and is also high in calcium. This calcium is easier to absorb than the calcium in cow's milk and is important for teeth and bones. Coconut yoghurt also contains vitamin D, magnesium and vitamin B12, and is particularly good in desserts.
Almond yoghurt
Almonds are popular with many people because of their sweet, mild taste. They contain many important nutrients and are also a wonderful source of high-quality unsaturated fatty acids. Almonds are also a good source of fibre that aids digestion. Almonds also contain important vitamins and minerals. Almond yoghurt is a creamy alternative to normal yoghurts. It has a particularly mild taste and goes extremely well with muesli.
Cashew yoghurt
It's no wonder that cashews are so popular: they not only taste great, they are also true brain food. Cashews are very healthy thanks to the variety of minerals and vitamins they contain, and they can also make you happy. So why not try cashew yoghurt? It's a super creamy alternative with a nutty flavour.
Soya yoghurt
Soy yoghurt is made in the same way as normal yoghurt, by adding lactic acid bacteria to the soy milk. This causes the soy milk to curdle and the yoghurt with its sour taste is created. Just like the other plant-based yoghurt alternatives, soy yoghurt contains no animal products and can therefore be enjoyed by vegans.
Try the delicious yoghurt granola bowl
We recently launched our cocoa cherry granola. This chocolate crunchy muesli with sour cherries and cocoa is wholly organic, vegan, wholegrain and contains no palm oil. And even more importantly, it is perfect when combined with yoghurt.
